KINTSUGI is a magazine that challenges society's idea of beauty and the stigma against skin imperfections (scar tissue, acne, discoloration, etc). The magazine contains thirty-six pages, four short articles, interviews, and a feature article.
There is a feminine grunge aesthetic to this publication, especially prevalent within the collage art. The bold color scheme of red, pink, and black tie in perfectly with the mixture of vintage and modern images. Furthermore, the collage art within this project is meant to replace promotional ads and further represent the complexity of what it means to be a woman. Indesign, Photoshop, and Procreate were used to design and layout this publication.
KINTSUGI was inspired by personal experiences with a lack representation in the beauty industry. It is also inspired by and named after the Japanese pottery practice Kintsugi, which is the act of putting broken pottery back together with gold glue. The gold glue, scar tissue, and collaging all portray the overall idea of separate pieces coming together to create something even more beautiful and special.
